The Significance of Modak in Ganesh Chaturthi

Modak, also known as ‘Ukadiche Modak’ in Marathi, is a sweet delicacy that symbolizes Lord Ganesha’s love for sweets. It is offered to the deity as a sign of devotion and to seek his blessings for wisdom, prosperity, and success. The word ‘Modak’ itself means happiness or delight, which perfectly describes the feeling of biting into this mouthwatering sweet.

Ganesha is traditionally presented with freshly prepared meals. It is advised not to prepare food in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Instead, prepare your dishes with a sense of devotion and mindfulness, and offer them to Ganesha promptly after their preparation.

1 cup water

A pinch of salt

1 tsp ghee (clarified butter)

Modak Recipe

Step-by-Step Modak Recipe:

For the Dough:

•Heat one cup of water in a pan and add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of ghee.

•Once the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat and add the rice flour gradually, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.

•Keep stirring until the mixture comes together as a dough and starts leaving the sides of the pan. Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool.

•Once the dough is cool enough to handle, knead it into a smooth, pliable dough. Cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.

For the Filling:

•Heat a teaspoon of ghee in a separate pan and add the grated coconut.

•Sauté the coconut for a few minutes until it becomes slightly dry and aromatic.

•Add the crushed jaggery, cardamom powder, and nutmeg powder (if using). Mix well.

•Cook the mixture on low heat, stirring continuously, until the jaggery melts and everything blends together into a sticky filling. This should take about 5-7 minutes.

Assembling the Modaks:

•Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it in your palm to make a small disc.

•Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center of the disc.

•Carefully gather the edges of the disc to form a pleated cone, making sure to seal the edges properly.

•Repeat this process for the remaining dough and filling to make more modaks.

Offering to Lord Ganesha:

•Before steaming the modaks, apply some ghee to the steamer plate or idli moulds to prevent sticking.

•Arrange the modaks on the steamer plate and steam them for about 10-12 minutes until they become shiny and translucent.

•Allow the modaks to cool for a few minutes before offering them to Lord Ganesha. Remember to offer them with love, devotion, and a sincere heart.
